The Principles of the Canadian Concept of "Intervention"

1. A total and unconditional belief in and respect for an individual who is deafblind.
   
   
2. All individuals who are deafblind can benefit from Intervention.
   
   
3. Individuals who are deafblind have a right to access information in their preferred mode of communication.
   
   
4. Intervention is "Doing With Not For."
   
   
5. No assumptions should be made regarding the cognitive ability of an individual with deafblindness.
   
   
6. Intervention is not a "miracle" formula, but it provides the best possible opportunity for persons who are deafblind to gather information, process it and develop communication and concepts.
   
   
7. Never underestimate the importance of the bond between the Intervenor and the individual who is deafblind.
   
   
8. Intervention must always address anticipation, motivation, communication, and confirmation.
   
   
9. Intervention should allow every experience to be a learning experience.
   
   
10. The amount of Intervention required and the form that it will take should be individualized to meet the specific needs and desires of each individual who is deafblind.
    
    
11. The focus a/Intervention should always be on the needs of the individual who is deafblind.

1.     Il faut avoir une confiance totale et un respect inconditionnel à l’égard des personnes sourdes-aveugles.

2.     L’intervention peut être profitable à toutes les personnes sourdes-aveugles.

3.     Les personnes sourdes-aveugles ont le droit d’accéder à l’information en utilisant le mode de communication qu’elles préfèrent.

4.     Intervenir, c’est accompagner la personne et non se substituer à elle.

5.     Il faut éviter toutes suppositions au sujet des capacités cognitives d’une personne sourde-aveugle.

6.     L’intervention n’est pas une formule « miracle », mais elle offre aux personnes sourdes-aveugles le meilleur moyen de rassembler et traiter de l’information ainsi que de développer la communication et la compréhension des concepts.

7.     Il ne faut jamais sous-estimer l’importance du lien qui existe entre l’intervenant et la personne sourde-aveugle.

8.     L’intervention doit toujours être axée sur l’anticipation, la motivation, la communication et la confirmation.

9.     L’intervention doit être telle que chaque expérience soit un apprentissage.

10. Le degré et la forme d’intervention nécessaires doivent être      adaptés à chaque personne sourde-aveugle de façon à répondre à ses attentes et à ses besoins particuliers.

11. L’intervention doit toujours être centrée sur les besoins des personnes sourdes-aveugles.
